Isla Contoy – Mexico's Protected Bird Island Near Holbox

Isla Contoy – Mexico's Protected Bird Island Near Holbox

Isla Contoy is one of those rare places that genuinely deserves the word pristine. A small, uninhabited island located about 30 km north of Isla Mujeres in the Caribbean Sea, it has been a protected national park since 1961 and remains one of the most important seabird nesting sites in the entire Mexican Caribbean. No hotels, no restaurants, no permanent population — just wild beaches, clear water, and one of the most intact ecosystems on this stretch of coast.

For visitors based on Holbox, Isla Contoy is reachable by boat and makes for an exceptional full-day excursion.

Why Isla Contoy Is Special

The island is home to more than 150 species of birds, including frigatebirds, brown pelicans, double-crested cormorants, red-footed boobies, and several species of herons and egrets. During nesting season (roughly May through September), the noise and activity around the colony areas is extraordinary.

The surrounding waters are equally rich. Coral reefs off the island support colorful reef fish, sea turtles, rays, and barracuda. Snorkeling here is excellent — visibility is typically high and the reef is in good condition due to the island's protected status.

What to Expect on a Day Trip

Most tours to Isla Contoy depart from Isla Mujeres in the early morning, though some operators run excursions from the broader Holbox/Cancún region. A typical day includes:

  • Morning snorkel stop — usually at a reef en route to the island
  • Arrival at Isla Contoy — guided walk through the island's protected paths to the bird observatory tower
  • Observatory climb — a wooden tower offering a panoramic view over the island, lagoons, and nesting colony areas
  • Museum visit — a small natural history museum explaining the island's ecology and conservation history
  • Charcoal seafood lunch — prepared by the boat crew, typically fresh fish or shrimp with rice, salad, fruit, and cold drinks
  • Free beach time — the afternoon on one of the island's calm, empty white-sand beaches

Rules & Conservation

Isla Contoy is strictly managed — visitor numbers are capped at around 200 people per day and tours must be booked through licensed operators. When on the island:

  • Stay on marked paths at all times
  • Do not approach or disturb nesting birds
  • No food or drink outside designated areas
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only
