Dry Season: December – April
The classic Holbox experience. Clear skies, turquoise water, warm temperatures in the high 20s°C, and almost no rain. The water is at its clearest for snorkelling and the beaches are stunning.
The trade-off: This is also the busiest and most expensive period. December 20–January 5 and Easter week see prices spike significantly and popular hotels sell out months in advance.
Best for: Beach holidays, honeymooners, first-time visitors who want guaranteed good weather, kitesurfers (February–April winds are excellent).
Book: 3–6 months ahead for boutique hotels; hostels 4–8 weeks ahead minimum.
Whale Shark Season: June – September
The defining Holbox experience for many visitors. Whale sharks congregate in the warm waters north of the island from late May through September, and swimming alongside them is genuinely bucket-list. No other destination in the world offers this combination of accessibility and frequency.
The trade-off: June–September is also rainy season. You'll typically get sunshine for most of the day with afternoon showers — not all-day rain. The heat and humidity are significant. July and August are busiest.
Best for: Whale shark encounters, adventure travellers, anyone for whom this is the primary reason to visit.
Note: Tours run daily (weather permitting) and are licensed — only certified operators can take groups out to the shark zone. Book your tour through your hotel or a reputable operator.
Shoulder Season: May & October–November
May is a transitional month — whale sharks are arriving, weather is warming, crowds and prices are below peak. A good compromise if you want the possibility of whale sharks without the full July crowds.
October–November is the best-kept secret on Holbox. Prices drop 25–40%, the island is far quieter, and the landscape is lush and green from the rain. October has the highest hurricane risk of the year — serious storms are uncommon but possible. By November, the weather is settling and many travellers find this to be the ideal Holbox experience.
Best for: Budget travellers, repeat visitors, anyone who dislikes crowds.
Month-by-Month Highlights
January – February
Dry season in full swing. Brilliant kite surfing in February (consistent winds off the lagoon side). Busy but worth it for the weather.
March – April
Still dry but getting hotter. Easter week (Semana Santa) sees Mexican domestic tourism spike sharply — book far ahead or avoid entirely. After Easter, crowds thin noticeably.
May
Transition month. Whale sharks may be spotted from late May. Prices start to ease. Hot and occasionally humid.
June – August
Whale shark peak. Hot, humid, afternoon rain most days but mornings are typically bright. July and August are the busiest months of the entire year. Book everything well in advance.
September
Whale sharks still present but crowds thinning. Hurricane season is active — check forecasts. Good value compared to July–August.
October
Quietest and cheapest month. Hurricane risk is real but most years pass without major impact. Some smaller businesses and restaurants close. Best for solitude.
November
The island reopens fully. Weather improving, crowds still low, prices remain off-peak. Often considered the ideal balance of conditions.
December
Dry season returns. Builds to peak holiday crowds and prices from mid-December. Book accommodation and flights early.
