Discover Holbox: Your Next Must-Visit Island Paradise

There's a small island off the northern tip of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula that most people still haven't heard of. It has no paved roads, no traffic lights, no chain hotels — and somehow, impossibly, one of the most beautiful coastlines in the entire Caribbean. That island is Holbox, and if you haven't been yet, it belongs at the top of your list.

How to Get to Holbox

Most visitors fly into Cancún International Airport, then make their way to the small port town of Chiquilá.

Transport Mode Time from Cancún Notes
Bus ~3 hrs ADO buses depart from Cancún centre
Private car or transfer ~2 hrs Most convenient option
Ferry (Chiquilá → Holbox) 20–30 min Runs every 30–60 min throughout the day

Once you step off the ferry, you'll notice something immediately: no cars. Golf carts, bikes, and bare feet are how you get around here.

Top Things to Do in Holbox

Swim with Whale Sharks

From June to September, the largest fish in the sea congregates in the warm waters just north of Holbox to feed. Guided tours take you out by boat so you can snorkel alongside these gentle giants — a completely unmissable experience if you time your visit right.

Bioluminescence at Night

After dark, the lagoons around Holbox come alive with bioluminescent plankton. Wade in or join a kayak tour and watch the water glow electric blue with every movement. One of nature's most surreal spectacles.

Watch the Flamingos at Punta Mosquito

Head east from town to the shallow lagoon where flocks of pink flamingos wade in the early morning light. It's free, it's close, and it's genuinely one of the most beautiful things you'll see on the island.

Explore the Islands by Boat

The classic half-day islands tour takes you to Isla Pájaros (a protected bird sanctuary), the freshwater Yalahau spring, and the pristine, deserted Isla Pasión. A perfect introduction to the waters that surround Holbox.

Kitesurfing & Kayaking

Consistent northeast winds make Holbox one of Mexico's top kitesurfing destinations. If you prefer something quieter, kayaking through the mangrove channels offers a very different but equally rewarding perspective on the island's wild side.

Where to Stay

Holbox has everything from boutique beachfront hotels to budget-friendly guesthouses tucked into town. The main beach strip is where you'll find most accommodation — close to tour departures, restaurants, and the best sunsets.

Local Culture & Food

The island has a warmth that's hard to describe — the pace is slow, the people are genuinely friendly, and the food is exceptional. Don't leave without trying:

  • Lobster pizza — a Holbox signature, found at several spots in town
  • Fresh ceviche — made with the day's catch, served everywhere
  • Street tacos — simple, cheap, and outstanding
  • Coconut agua fresca — the perfect antidote to the midday heat

The island also has a vibrant street art scene, with murals covering walls throughout town — perfect for a slow afternoon walk.

Practical Tips

  • Bring cash — ATM availability is limited and often runs out; many places are cash-only
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only — chemical sunscreens harm the marine ecosystem and are increasingly restricted
  • Book whale shark tours in advance — July and August sell out weeks ahead
  • Pack mosquito repellent — essential at dusk near the lagoon side of the island
  • Best visited Nov–May for calm seas; Jun–Sep for whale sharks
