10 Must-Do Activities in Holbox Island – 2026
Holbox Island is small enough to feel intimate and wild enough to feel undiscovered. The activities that make it special aren't theme parks or organised attractions — they're natural, unhurried, and rooted in the island's extraordinary ecosystem. Here are the 10 you simply cannot miss.
1. Swim with Whale Sharks (June–September)
The headline experience. Whale sharks the size of buses gather north of Holbox each summer to feed near the surface, and licensed tours take small groups to snorkel alongside them. There is nothing else like it in Mexico, and arguably nowhere easier in the world to do it. Book a licensed operator — unlicensed boats are prohibited in the zone.
Practical: Tours depart ~7am, return by noon. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a towel, and water. Book at least a week ahead in July–August.
2. Watch Bioluminescence at Night
The lagoons around Holbox glow blue-green on moonless nights — millions of microscopic organisms that produce light when disturbed. You can wade in from Punta Coco beach for free or join a guided kayak tour into the deeper channels. One of those experiences that sounds like an exaggeration until you see it.
Practical: Best June–September. Check moon phase before you go — full moon washes out the effect.
3. See Flamingos at Punta Mosquito at Sunrise
Cycle or walk east from town before sunrise, arrive at Punta Mosquito as the sky turns pink, and watch hundreds of flamingos wade in the shallow lagoon with the light coming up behind them. No entry fee. No tour required. One of the most photographed moments in the Yucatán.
Practical: 20–30 min by bike from town. Go early — flamingos disperse mid-morning.
4. Take the Islands Boat Tour
Half a day, three islands: a bird sanctuary, a freshwater spring, and a deserted sandbar. The Yalahau freshwater spring alone is worth the trip — crystal-clear, cool, and surrounded by mangroves. Standard tours include lunch and snorkelling gear.
Practical: Book through your hotel or any tour kiosk in town. ~1,200–1,500 MXN per person.
5. Kayak the Mangroves
Rent a kayak and spend a morning drifting through the mangrove channels — sea turtles, rays, herons, and the occasional crocodile in the distance. No guide needed for the main channels; guided tours go deeper. One of the best ways to experience the island without noise or crowds.
Practical: Rentals ~200–400 MXN/half-day from shops near the main square.
6. Snorkel Cabo Catoche
The reef where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Caribbean — one of the most biodiverse marine environments in the region. Sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks (in season), and abundant reef fish. Accessible year-round via day trip from Holbox.
Practical: ~800–1,200 MXN per person including snorkel gear and transport.
7. Eat Your Way Through Town
Holbox's food scene punches well above its size. Lobster pizza at Roots. Fresh ceviche at any of the beachside shacks. Breakfast tacos from street carts. Mezcal cocktails at sunset. A proper meal at Luuma or Clandestino. Plan at least two dedicated food evenings.
Practical: Mix cheap street food (40–80 MXN per taco) with one or two sit-down dinners (300–600 MXN/person).
8. Kitesurf (or Watch the Kiteboarders)
Holbox's flat water and consistent wind make it one of Mexico's best kitesurfing beaches. If you don't kite, watching the riders from the beach is genuinely entertaining. If you do — or want to learn — several schools here have strong reputations.
Practical: Best wind November–August. Lessons from ~1,500 MXN.
9. Explore the Mural Trail
Artists from Mexico and around the world have covered Holbox's buildings in an ever-growing collection of murals. The walking trail winds through the sandy streets of town and takes about an hour. Free, self-guided, and a good way to orientate yourself on arrival.
Practical: No map needed — just wander from the main square outward. Most murals are within 5 minutes' walk.
10. Do Nothing — Properly
One of the underrated skills of visiting Holbox is actually switching off. Beach hammock. Cold coconut. The sound of the waves. No agenda. The island's entire rhythm is designed for this, and resisting the urge to fill every hour is worth the effort.
Practical: Free. Required.
