What to Do on Holbox Island – 10 Best Activities 2026

Holbox is one of those rare places where the list of things to do is short enough to actually accomplish — and memorable enough that you'll want to come back for everything you missed. No cars, no high-rises, no overhyped resort experience. Just a small island in the northern Yucatán with some of the most extraordinary natural experiences in Mexico.

Here's what to put on your Holbox itinerary in 2026.

1. Swim with Whale Sharks

Between June and mid-September, whale sharks gather north of Holbox in large numbers to feed on fish eggs near the surface. Joining a guided snorkel tour to swim alongside these 10-metre gentle giants is consistently described by visitors as life-changing. Tours depart early morning from the town dock and typically include a stop at Cabo Catoche reef. Book well ahead for July and August — spots fill weeks in advance.

When: June–September | Cost: ~2,000–2,500 MXN/person | Book via: your hotel or a licensed operator

2. Watch the Bioluminescence

On moonless nights, the shallow lagoons around Holbox shimmer with blue bioluminescent light produced by microscopic plankton that glow when disturbed. Wade in from Punta Coco beach for free, or join a guided nighttime kayak tour to reach the channels where the effect is most intense. Peak visibility is June–September when water temperatures are highest.

When: Year-round, best June–Sep | Cost: Free (beach) or ~500–800 MXN (guided kayak tour)

3. Take the Islands Boat Tour

The classic half-day boat trip — the best introduction to the waters around Holbox. Three stops: Isla Pájaros (a protected bird sanctuary with frigatebirds, spoonbills, and herons), Yalahau (a natural freshwater spring where you swim), and Isla Pasión (a deserted white-sand island with perfectly calm water). Suits all ages and budgets.

When: Year-round | Cost: ~1,200–1,500 MXN/person including lunch

4. Spot Flamingos at Punta Mosquito

Walk or cycle east along the beach to Punta Mosquito, where flocks of pink flamingos wade in the shallow coastal lagoon. Best at sunrise or late afternoon. Completely free, and the contrast of flamingos against turquoise water and blue sky is genuinely spectacular. About 20–30 minutes by bike from town.

When: Year-round | Cost: Free

5. Kayak the Mangroves

The mangrove forests ringing the island hide an entire world — herons on the roots, sea turtles in the channels, rays gliding over sandy bottoms. Renting a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and exploring on your own schedule is one of the best ways to experience the island slowly. Several rental shops near the town square offer half-day and full-day options.

When: Year-round | Cost: ~200–400 MXN for half-day rental

6. Go Kitesurfing

Holbox's consistent northeast winds, shallow water, and long obstacle-free beach make it one of Mexico's premier kitesurfing locations. Schools offer beginner lessons and equipment rental for experienced riders. Best wind: November through August.

When: Nov–Aug | Cost: Lessons from ~1,500 MXN | Rentals from ~800 MXN/half-day

7. Go Fishing

Holbox has been a fishing community for generations, and local captains still take visitors out on the water. The shallow flats are world-class for fly fishing — permit, bonefish, and tarpon — while offshore trips target mahi-mahi, wahoo, and sailfish. Half-day and full-day trips available year-round. Ask your hotel for captain recommendations.

When: Year-round | Cost: ~1,500–3,000 MXN/half-day

8. Explore the Town

Sandy streets, colourful houses covered in murals, market stalls, ceviche bars, and a laid-back central square. Worth a few hours of unhurried wandering. Grab a fresh coconut, browse the hammocks and handcrafts, and find a rooftop bar for sunset. Alma Bar and the area around the main square are the social heart of the island.

When: Any time | Cost: Free

9. Snorkel at Cabo Catoche

Even outside whale shark season, the reef at Cabo Catoche — where the Caribbean meets the Gulf of Mexico — offers excellent snorkelling with sea turtles, manta rays, and abundant reef fish. Most tour operators offer dedicated snorkelling day trips throughout the year.

When: Year-round | Cost: ~800–1,200 MXN/person

10. Actually Relax on the Beach

The main beach curves along the northern shore in a long arc of white sand and shallow turquoise water — ideal for swimming, paddling, and doing nothing at all. For something quieter, Punta Coco on the western tip has fewer people and some of the best sunsets on the island. Both are free.

When: Any time | Cost: Free
