Holbox Island – Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Holbox (pronounced "hol-bosh") is a small island off the northern tip of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, and it's one of the most genuinely special places in the Caribbean. No cars, no high-rises, no cruise ship crowds — just white-sand streets, turquoise water, and an unhurried pace of life that's increasingly rare anywhere in Mexico.

This guide covers everything a first-time visitor needs: how to get there, what to do, when to go, and how to make the most of it.

Top Things to Do in Holbox

Swim with Whale Sharks

Between June and September, whale sharks gather in the warm waters north of Holbox to feed. This is one of the world's great wildlife encounters — you swim alongside the largest fish on the planet in crystal-clear open water. Tours depart early morning and include snorkeling at Cabo Catoche. Book well in advance for July and August.

Bioluminescence Kayaking

On moonless nights, the lagoons around Holbox glow with bioluminescent plankton. Every paddle stroke and hand movement lights up the dark water — an otherworldly experience that's completely free if you wade in, or enhanced with a guided kayak tour.

Islands Tour (Pájaros, Yalahau, Pasión)

The classic half-day boat trip visits Isla Pájaros (a bird sanctuary with frigatebirds and spoonbills), the Yalahau freshwater spring (great for swimming), and Isla Pasión (a deserted white-sand island). A perfect introduction to the waters around Holbox.

Flamingos at Punta Mosquito

Walk or golf-cart east from town to Punta Mosquito, where pink flamingos wade in the shallow lagoon. Best at sunrise or late afternoon. Free, and genuinely breathtaking.

Kitesurfing

Holbox's consistent northeast winds, shallow water, and obstacle-free beach make it one of Mexico's top kitesurfing spots. Schools cater to complete beginners through advanced riders.

Kayaking the Mangroves

Paddle through the mangrove channels that surround the island. Spot herons, sea turtles, and rays in the stillness of these green corridors.

Practical Tips

  • Cash is king — many restaurants and small shops don't accept cards; there's one ATM in town (it runs out)
  • No cars — get around on foot, rented bicycle, or golf cart
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only — chemical sunscreens are banned to protect the marine ecosystem
  • Book whale shark tours early — July and August sell out weeks in advance
  • Mosquito repellent — essential in the evenings near the lagoon side of the island
