What to Do on Holbox Island – 10 Best Activities

Holbox Island is one of those rare places where the list of things to do is actually short enough to accomplish — and memorable enough that you'll want to come back for everything you missed. No cars, no high-rises, no overhyped resort experience. Just a small island in the northern Yucatán with some of the most extraordinary natural experiences in Mexico.

Here's what to put on your Holbox itinerary.

1. Swim with Whale Sharks

Between June and mid-September, whale sharks gather north of Holbox in large numbers to feed on fish eggs near the surface. Joining a guided snorkel tour to swim alongside these 10-metre gentle giants is an experience that most people describe as life-changing. Tours depart from the town dock in the early morning and typically include a stop at Cabo Catoche reef. Book well ahead for July and August — spots fill fast.

2. Watch the Bioluminescence

On moonless nights, the shallow lagoons around Holbox shimmer with blue bioluminescent light — produced by microscopic plankton that glow when disturbed. You can wade into the lagoon at Punta Coco beach for free, or join a guided nighttime kayak tour to get deeper into the channels where the effect is most intense. Either way, it's one of the most otherworldly things you'll ever see.

3. Take the Islands Boat Tour

The classic half-day boat trip covers three stops: Isla Pájaros (a protected bird sanctuary home to frigatebirds, spoonbills, and herons), Yalahau (a natural freshwater spring where you can swim), and Isla Pasión (a deserted white-sand island with perfectly calm water). It's the best introduction to the waters around Holbox and suits all ages.

4. Spot Flamingos at Punta Mosquito

Walk or rent a golf cart east along the beach to Punta Mosquito, where flocks of pink flamingos wade in the shallow coastal lagoon. Best at sunrise or late afternoon when they're most active. It's completely free, and the contrast of flamingos against the turquoise water and blue sky is genuinely stunning.

5. Kayak or SUP the Mangroves

The mangrove forests that ring the island hide an entire world — herons perched on roots, sea turtles drifting through the channels, rays gliding over sandy bottoms. Renting a kayak or stand-up paddleboard is one of the best ways to slow down and explore. Several rental shops in town offer half-day and full-day options.

6. Go Kitesurfing

Holbox's consistent northeast winds, shallow water, and long obstacle-free beach make it one of Mexico's premier kitesurfing spots. Several schools on the island offer lessons for complete beginners as well as equipment rental for experienced riders. The best wind runs from November through August.

7. Go Fishing

Holbox has been a fishing community for generations, and those local captains still take visitors out on the water. The shallow flats around the island are world-class for fly fishing (permit, bonefish, tarpon), while deeper offshore trips target mahi-mahi, wahoo, and sailfish. Half-day and full-day trips available year-round.

8. Explore the Town on Foot

The town of Holbox is worth a few hours of wandering on its own. Sandy streets, colourful houses plastered with murals, market stalls, ceviche bars, and a laid-back main square. Grab a fresh coconut, browse the hammocks and handcrafts, and find a rooftop bar for sunset over the Caribbean. Alma Bar at Hotel Villas Tiburón is a favourite.

9. Relax on the Beach — Properly

The main beach at Holbox curves along the northern shore of the island in a long arc of white sand and shallow, flat water. It's ideal for swimming, paddling, and doing absolutely nothing. For something more secluded, Punta Coco on the western tip of the island has fewer people and spectacular sunsets.

10. Snorkeling at Cabo Catoche

Even outside whale shark season, the reef at Cabo Catoche (where the Caribbean meets the Gulf of Mexico) offers world-class snorkeling — sea turtles, manta rays, reef fish in abundance. Most tour operators offer dedicated snorkeling day trips when whale shark season is over.
