Season by Season

Dry Season – November to April

This is peak Holbox weather — warm, sunny days, low humidity, and cool evenings. The trade winds keep things comfortable even when the sun is strong. The sea is at its clearest and calmest.

  • Best months: February, March, April
  • Temperatures: 24–28°C (75–83°F)
  • Sea conditions: Calm, excellent for swimming and snorkeling
  • Crowds: High December–March, tapering off in April
  • Tip: Book accommodation 3–6 months in advance for December–March travel

Whale Shark Season – June to September

From late May through mid-September, whale sharks gather in the waters north of Holbox to feed on fish eggs. Swimming with whale sharks is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on the planet — and Holbox is one of the best places in the world to do it.

The weather during this period is hot and humid, with afternoon showers that usually pass quickly. Mornings are typically clear and perfect for water activities.

  • Best months: June, July
  • Temperatures: 30–31°C (86–88°F)
  • Rain pattern: Short afternoon showers, mornings usually sunny
  • Crowds: High in July–August
  • Tip: Book whale shark tours at least 1–2 weeks in advance in peak months

Hurricane Season – August to October

Holbox sits in the hurricane belt. September is the highest-risk month, and October can also see tropical storms. Most years pass without a major event, but it's worth knowing the risks.

  • Travel insurance with cancellation coverage is strongly recommended
  • September is the cheapest month to visit — very quiet, great deals
  • October is a gamble: some guesthouses close, but those that stay open offer good rates

Shoulder Season – April–May & November

These are the sweet spot months — great weather, fewer crowds, lower prices. April is especially good: dry season weather without the February/March peak pricing. November is similar, with things settling down after summer.

What to Pack for Holbox Weather

  • Rain jacket or poncho: Essential May–October for afternoon showers.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be present, especially after rain and at dusk.
